realities and contradictions inherent in the formation of his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo. In his photomontages , he superimposes archival images of European current state of decline and ruin The remnants and realities of industrialisation and global trade.

These artists reveal that history is more than a straightforward As a result, it has been easy to dismiss the continent ,which is forever seemingly reaching out to receive food and money . Africa appears unconnected to the tide of the contemporary art world, but this is set to change.

The theme of this years Venice Biennale; Illuminations, sparks debate to sharpen our tools of perception and for all nations to question their geography and space that they occupy now and in the future "Seeing Ourselves" presented at the Zimbabwe Pavilion, presents a window into the life of that nation, through the eyes of four selected artists.

Zimbabwe's image has shifted away from being the beautiful and desirable house of stone - a nationally significant material, on which its reputation and very soul had been proudly built. Instead it's perception has undergone a radical shift and the country is seen as not so desirable and not so beautiful.

Misheck Masamvu an emerging young painter, is willing to move beyond the immediately commercial ,as seen in his Gentleman's Hustle.2011. He remarked 'I wish to produce a body of work pregnant of optimism and hope. I wish to stimulate positive energy and bring to attention the need to create new emblems and motifs that encourages dialogue. I desire to find alternative solutions to the sometimes dire circumstances we come across '.

Visit Venice and see for yourself !

Elise Godsell

Illuminazioni
La Biennale di Venezia
Until 27 November 2011

Manifesto:a means of expression

Manifesto presents Simo Lagnawi

We are pleased to announce that our first night after 1 year was one of the best nights to date. Gerrard House will be the new ‘home’ of Manifesto, in a more warm, relaxed and familiar environment.

The band invited to perform and which is now part of Manifesto’s portfolio, is Simo Lagnawi. Simo is a charismatic dancer and player of the Guembri - a lute-like stringed instrument made from camel skin - while his mesmeric voice harks back to the original use of Gnawa in rousing people into a 'cleansing' trance. In the short three years the boundary-pushing Gnawa master Simo has been in the U.K he has already played in different venues including Leighton House and most recently Glastonbury Festival keeping an exceptional African tradition alive.

This will be a culturally rich night out that should appeal to anyone looking to experience one of the most intimist forms of music in the world. Joining them will be resident DJ’s spinning music from a variety of African genres. Alberto Tavares opens the evening with his mellow eclectic mix on the decks. Later in the evening Manifesto has invited the renowned producer and DJ Simbad. Constantly travelling between London, Tokyo or New York via Puerto Rico & other places , he has worked with some great artists including Tony Allen & Bugz In The Attic or Talvin Singh to name a few…Dj Simbad will hit the turntables with his inimitable, sassy, and sexy spin on dance African style.

Moreover, there will be a specially designed African inspired menu created exclusively for the Manifesto Acoustic evening. The menu consists of traditional Chicken stew from Angola (Xinxin) and Masamba from Mozambique.

Manifesto Acoustic is a concept whereby live music, afro-beats, DJ sessions and traditional food intertwine. But it also served to document resistance and record the lives of those subjected to racial laws and social segregation.

This vibrant work of 17 South African photographers address that history. Through their images they challenge the country's rethinking of issues of identity across race, gender, class and politics.

All the photographers question what it is to be human at this time in South Africa.

Go see !
Figures & Fictions; Contemporary South African Photography showing at the V & A London until 17 July.

Elise Godsell

Manifesto: a means of expression

Basketry; Making Human Nature

Basketry is something everybody understands; It is a marriage of practicality and beauty.

Basketry; Making Human Nature is a new stunning exhibition showcasing both anthropology and visual art. Its techniques and materials are vividly illustrated by both beautiful world objects and contemporary art.

In Central Africa close communication with the dead and beliefs in the effectiveness of their powers, are mediated by healers, diviners and banganga (ritual specialists ).Banganga use containers, including baskets, filled with spiritually charged materials for divination purposes.

These baskets become so potent that they are themselves often contained in places of secrecy.Basketry costumes appear in masquerades in which a masked figure impersonates a spirit, ancestor or some other ideal entity. Masks have a life of their own, acting as a second skin which subsumes the identity of the performer.

This mask is from Salampasu, Democratic Republic of Congo 1951.

The exhibition is at the Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia, Norwich until 22 May 2011.

Elise Godsell.

Not to be missed.

Manifesto: a means of expression

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Musical

The musical Fela! Being part of a western Capitalistic, "well designed society" where the flow of information is constructed and the education poor, people forget to ask pertinent question such as why Africa is divided by straight lines.

Hence this play is an opportunity to introduce a part of history that is supposed to be given more attention since it would provide a useful source of information and it would explain many political decisions taken upon Africa.

Ultimatum:Ultimato-te was presented in Cape Verde and in England, and it will sail further in 2011.

www.10pt.org/ultimatum

It was acquired by Sir Hans Sloane whose collection formed the basis of the British Museum, when it was established in 1753.

The first part of the display describes the journey of the drum from West Africa, to the colony of Virginia and in doing so relates to the suffering and displacement of people ,as a result of the transatlantic slave trade.

This journey would typically include the practice of'dancing' the slaves, which meant in effect, forcible exercise out on deck when the drum would be used.

The second part of the display shows the massive influence of African and African- American music, on most popular music from the 20th century.

Visitors who take smart phones to this exhibition will be able to download the soundtrack to the display.

Elise Godsell

Manifesto:a means of expression.

Urban Africa; David Adjaye

The London based architect David Adjaye ( born in Tanzania) has amassed over 3,000 picture postcard size 'snaps' of his foray into Africa.
Most document various styles of urban buildings ( well he is an architect, after all), but I am not too sure what he is trying to achive in this exhibition.

It is well neigh impossible to document a vast continent such as Africa, through the windows of a taxi !. Currently on show at the British Museum, London.

Ife (pronounced Ee-fah) is located in Southwest Nigeria and is regarded as the spiritual heartland of the local Yoruba speaking people. Yoruba are Nigeria's largest ethnic group and their myths celebrate Ife as the center of the creation of the world and all mankind.

These refined brass and copper sculptures, made using the lost wax process, were found adjacent to the Royal Place in 1938. They are now acknowledged, as some of the most refined and beautiful sculptures to be found in Africa.

A hundred or so pieces in this, not to be missed exhibition, shows that Africa civilization, was as sophisticated , as anything in the west during the 13/15th centuries.

This must see exhibition, will surely challenge people's assumption about the nature of Art coming from Africa. Thousands of Africans hope for a better life, trying to escape bad economic and human rights conditions.

They make the perilous departure from N. Africa across the Med to the coast of Sicily, in small boats, often drifting for days on end. In the film they end up at the seaside village of Agrigento, where local families sunbathe whilst the 'clandenstines' are washed ashore, often dead. Such beautiful surroundings, but bathed in tragedy.

Julien uses no narrative, but on the 3 screens we have just a collage of sound and image. plots confront the viewer with familiar situations of romance, comedy, witchcraft, bribery, prostitution. The narrative is overdramatic, deprived of happy endings, tragic. The aesthetic is loud, violent, excessive; nothing is said, everything is shouted.

In his travels through West Africa, Hugo has been intrigued by this distinct style in constructing a fictional world where everyday and unreal elements intertwine.

By asking a team of actors and assistants to recreate Nollywood myths and symbols as if they were on movie sets, Hugo initiated the creation of a verisimilar reality.

His vision of the film industry’s interpretation of the world results in a gallery of hallucinatory and unsettling images.

The tableaux of the series depict situations clearly surreal but that could be real on a set; furthermore, they are rooted in the local symbolic imaginary. The boundaries between documentary and fiction become very fluid, and we are left wondering whether our perceptions of the real world are indeed real."

Also the series The Hyena & Other Men are not to be missed.

www.pieterhugo.com

Manifesto: a means of expression

Cape Verde Crioulo Colony to Independent Nation

"The Cape Verde Islands are located off the coast of Senegal, were first settled during the Portuguese Age of Discovery in the fifteenth century. Dr. Richard Lobban outlines Cape Verde’s complex history over five centuries, beginning with its role in the slave trade, the years under Portuguese colonial administration and its protracted armed struggle on the Guinea coast for national independence.

Dr. Lobban offers a rich ethnography of the islands, exploring the diverse heritage of Cape Verdeans who have descended from Africans, Europeans, and Luso-Africans. Looking at economics and politics, Lobban reflects on Cape Verde’s efforts to achieve economic growth and development, analyzing the move from colonialism to state socialism and on to a privatized market economy built around tourism, fishing, small-scale mining, and agricultural production.

He then chronicles Cape Verde’s peaceful transition from one-party rule to elections and political pluralism. He concludes with an overview of the prospects for this tiny oceanic nation on a pathway to development."

Manifesto: a means of expression

How to write about Africa by Binyavanga Wainaina

Essay

Always use the word 'Africa' or 'Darkness' or 'Safari' in your title. Subtitles may include the words 'Zanzibar', 'Masai', 'Zulu', 'Zambezi', 'Congo', 'Nile', 'Big', 'Sky', 'Shadow', 'Drum', 'Sun' or 'Bygone'. Also useful are words such as 'Guerrillas', 'Timeless', 'Primordial' and 'Tribal'. Note that 'People' means Africans who are not black, while 'The People' means black Africans.

Never have a picture of a well-adjusted African on the cover of your book, or in it, unless that African has won the Nobel Prize. An AK-47, prominent ribs, naked breasts: use these. If you must include an African, make sure you get one in Masai or Zulu or Dogon dress.

In your text, treat Africa as if it were one country. It is hot and dusty with rolling grasslands and huge herds of animals and tall, thin people who are starving. Or it is hot and steamy with very short people who eat primates. Don't get bogged down with precise descriptions. Africa is big: fifty-four countries, 900 million people who are too busy starving and dying and warring and emigrating to read your book. The continent is full of deserts, jungles, highlands, savannahs and many other things, but your reader doesn't care about all that, so keep your descriptions romantic and evocative and unparticular.

Make sure you show how Africans have music and rhythm deep in their souls, and eat things no other humans eat. Do not mention rice and beef and wheat; monkey-brain is an African's cuisine of choice, along with goat, snake, worms and grubs and all manner of game meat. Make sure you show that you are able to eat such food without flinching, and describe how you learn to enjoy it—because you care.

Taboo subjects: ordinary domestic scenes, love between Africans (unless a death is involved), references to African writers or intellectuals, mention of school-going children who are not suffering from yaws or Ebola fever or female genital mutilation.

Throughout the book, adopt a sotto voice, in conspiracy with the reader, and a sad I-expected-so-much tone. Establish early on that your liberalism is impeccable, and mention near the beginning how much you love Africa, how you fell in love with the place and can't live without her. Africa is the only continent you can love—take advantage of this. If you are a man, thrust yourself into her warm virgin forests. If you are a woman, treat Africa as a man who wears a bush jacket and disappears off into the sunset. Africa is to be pitied, worshipped or dominated. Whichever angle you take, be sure to leave the strong impression that without your intervention and your important book, Africa is doomed.

Your African characters may include naked warriors, loyal servants, diviners and seers, ancient wise men living in hermitic splendour. Or corrupt politicians, inept polygamous travel-guides, and prostitutes you have slept with. The Loyal Servant always behaves like a seven-year-old and needs a firm hand; he is scared of snakes, good with children, and always involving you in his complex domestic dramas. The Ancient Wise Man always comes from a noble tribe (not the money-grubbing tribes like the Gikuyu, the Igbo or the Shona). He has rheumy eyes and is close to the Earth. The Modern African is a fat man who steals and works in the visa office, refusing to give work permits to qualified Westerners who really care about Africa. He is an enemy of development, always using his government job to make it difficult for pragmatic and good-hearted expats to set up NGOs or Legal Conservation Areas. Or he is an Oxford-educated intellectual turned serial-killing politician in a Savile Row suit. He is a cannibal who likes Cristal champagne, and his mother is a rich witch-doctor who really runs the country.

Among your characters you must always include The Starving African, who wanders the refugee camp nearly naked, and waits for the benevolence of the West. Her children have flies on their eyelids and pot bellies, and her breasts are flat and empty. She must look utterly helpless. She can have no past, no history; such diversions ruin the dramatic moment. Moans are good. She must never say anything about herself in the dialogue except to speak of her (unspeakable) suffering. Also be sure to include a warm and motherly woman who has a rolling laugh and who is concerned for your well-being. Just call her Mama. Her children are all delinquent. These characters should buzz around your main hero, making him look good. Your hero can teach them, bathe them, feed them; he carries lots of babies and has seen Death. Your hero is you (if reportage), or a beautiful, tragic international celebrity/aristocrat who now cares for animals (if fiction).

Bad Western characters may include children of Tory cabinet ministers, Afrikaners, employees of the World Bank. When talking about exploitation by foreigners mention the Chinese and Indian traders. Blame the West for Africa's situation. But do not be too specific.

Broad brushstrokes throughout are good. Avoid having the African characters laugh, or struggle to educate their kids, or just make do in mundane circumstances. Have them illuminate something about Europe or America in Africa. African characters should be colourful, exotic, larger than life—but empty inside, with no dialogue, no conflicts or resolutions in their stories, no depth or quirks to confuse the cause.

Describe, in detail, naked breasts (young, old, conservative, recently raped, big, small) or mutilated genitals, or enhanced genitals. Or any kind of genitals. And dead bodies. Or, better, naked dead bodies. And especially rotting naked dead bodies. Remember, any work you submit in which people look filthy and miserable will be referred to as the 'real Africa', and you want that on your dust jacket. Do not feel queasy about this: you are trying to help them to get aid from the West. The biggest taboo in writing about Africa is to describe or show dead or suffering white people.

Animals, on the other hand, must be treated as well rounded, complex characters. They speak (or grunt while tossing their manes proudly) and have names, ambitions and desires. They also have family values: see how lions teach their children? Elephants are caring, and are good feminists or dignified patriarchs. So are gorillas. Never, ever say anything negative about an elephant or a gorilla. Elephants may attack people's property, destroy their crops, and even kill them. Always take the side of the elephant. Big cats have public-school accents. Hyenas are fair game and have vaguely Middle Eastern accents. Any short Africans who live in the jungle or desert may be portrayed with good humour (unless they are in conflict with an elephant or chimpanzee or gorilla, in which case they are pure evil).

After celebrity activists and aid workers, conservationists are Africa's most important people. Do not offend them. You need them to invite you to their 30,000-acre game ranch or 'conservation area', and this is the only way you will get to interview the celebrity activist. Often a book cover with a heroic-looking conservationist on it works magic for sales. Anybody white, tanned and wearing khaki who once had a pet antelope or a farm is a conservationist, one who is preserving Africa's rich heritage. When interviewing him or her, do not ask how much funding they have; do not ask how much money they make off their game. Never ask how much they pay their employees.

Readers will be put off if you don't mention the light in Africa. And sunsets, the African sunset is a must. It is always big and red. There is always a big sky. Wide empty spaces and game are critical—Africa is the Land of Wide Empty Spaces. When writing about the plight of flora and fauna, make sure you mention that Africa is overpopulated. When your main character is in a desert or jungle living with indigenous peoples (anybody short) it is okay to mention that Africa has been severely depopulated by Aids and War (use caps).

You'll also need a nightclub called Tropicana, where mercenaries, evil nouveau riche Africans and prostitutes and guerrillas and expats hang out. Always end your book with Nelson Mandela saying something about rainbows or renaissances. Because you care.

Binyavanga Wainaina lives in Nairobi, Kenya. He enters the church and starts whistling. The sound is so beautiful, that the priest is left in tears and the doves listen in absolute silence. And there are the people of the village, like the madman KaLua, the old widow Dona Rebenta in her large wooden bed, the gravedigger KoTimbalo, KeMunuMunu, the travelling salesman and Dissoxi, who fills her house with sea salt and longs for the ocean.

For a whole week the reader accompanies these characters, their dreams and their longings, the village’s whisperings and gossiping.
All are surrendered to the moods of these melodies. But the whistler himself is affected by the inhabitants of the village. His melodies can rouse happy or sad feelings. The priest announces that the following Sunday mass will be held with the whistler. On the Sunday he bewitches the priest and the people in the church to such an extent, that they fall in a state of trance and unimagined sensuality and zest for life. The mass is followed by an orgiastic celebration. On Monday the whistler and KeMunuMunu leave the village and the reader likewise bids his wistful farewell to a bewitching world.”

The Whistler is fascinating book by young Angolan author Ondjaki. He has also made a documentary about his hometown Luanda “Hope the pitanga cherries grow - tales of Luanda”.

By Vania Mendes

Manifesto: a means of expression

Eileen Perrier, photographer

This work is a vibrant and gutsy African mastery that i would like to share with you.

"My work has drawn upon the long tradition of African portraiture since my first visit to Ghana in 1996. It delivers a strong flavour of South Africa…Six actors, bristling with versatility, play all the parts telling and acting their story.

Winner of 14 top South African Awards including:

Best New South African Play

Best Production

South Africa’s Naledi Theatre Awards

At The Tricycle until 11 Jul 09,

269 Kilburn High Road, London NW 6 7JR

Not to be missed.

Manifesto: a means of expression

Abraao Vicente Photography from Cabo Verde

Abraao Vincent: Cabo Verde Rituais (Cape Verde Rituals)

Abraao Vincent is a local photographer and fine artist from Cape Verde, I would like to share with you his beautiful images.

He has the ability to capture the true essence of the culture, beauty of the people and amazing contrasts of the land and sea. What a day to learn of the terrible news that one of the leading proponents of Africa’s liberation – Dr. Tajudeen Abdul Raheem - should be so tragically lost in a senseless car accident in Nairobi.
Tajudeen led Justice Africa’s work with the African Union since its early days. He combined this with his role as General Secretary of the Pan-African Movement, chairperson of the Centre for Democracy and Development, the Pan-African Development Education and Advocacy Programme, and was a fighter in the struggle to get the UN’s Millennium Development Campaign to support meaningful programmes. There was hardly a pan African initiative that took place without Tajudeen’s inimitable presence, support, humour and perceptive political perspectives. It remains a mystery to us how he managed to combine all of this with writing his weekly ‘Pan African Postcard’ that were published regularly in Pambazuka News and in several newspapers including The Monitor (Uganda), Weekly Trust (Nigeria), The African (Tanzania), Nairobi Star (Kenya) and the Weekly Herald (Zimbabwe). You could always rely on Tajudeen to draw our attention to the most significant aspects of the latest political event in Africa - just as you could rely on him to provide guidance and encouragement during hard times, restoring in us the courage for the longer struggles ahead for emancipation of the continent.

Tajudeen’s departure leaves a massive hole in all our lives. But if his life is to mean anything, we must follow his voice in the signature line of his every email – ‘Don’t agonise, Organise!’

Pambazuka News

http://www.pambazuka.org/en/

Manifesto: a means of expression

Chioma and Oluchi Ogwuegbu's journey across Africa!

The adventure, dubbed ‘Celebrate Africa’ started with Chioma’s dream to travel across the globe, which later became a dream to travel across Africa to show Africans and the world the positive things in Africa. Having lost his leg to a land mine, Victorio returns to the city of Luanda in an attempt to find work and shelter. Proudly wearing his medal, his attempts to find employment are fruitless. Soon it becomes apparent that Victorio has now been shunned by the society he once fought for.

Beautifully intertwined are the stories of two other characters, the attractive yet naive schoolteacher Joana and the young, troubled street kid Manu.

Gratefully, untouched by the likes of Hollywood CGI action sequences or saccharine-sweet romantic interludes, this film is a rough diamond. A plot devoid of polish means that the actors are allowed to concentrate soley on the heart-felt portrayal of their characters.

The realism and no-holds barred attitude towards bringing the impact of the savageries of war upon society is what makes the film so striking.

By Fly Global Music & Culture

Manifesto Film Festival

Film festivals are notorious for artsy, occasionally pretentious audiences indulging in the most avant-garde and often abstract of the film world.

Not this time. This film festival boasts authenticity, grit and spirit. Led by Alberto Tavares, the man behind the Manifesto movement, it promises to indulge the senses and challenge a spectrum of emotions through the story-telling of two films. Both features representing the Portuguese speaking African nations or "P.A.L.O.P." as they have been coined. The festival showcases two films entwined with the Manifesto movement and its dedication to bringing cherished recognition of these nations. As well as being a platform for up-and-coming African artists it also boasts opportunities for those who choose her as their muse.

Firstly, the critically acclaimed and award-winning, The Hero. Set in post-war Angola, the film follows the return home of Victorio, a civil war veteran. It promises to poigantly demonstrate the tragic consequences of civil war upon society and the impact of its aftermath of individuals. Within this story are carefully weaved the tales of three other characters and the cost of war upon their lives.

The second feature is a feature documentary entitled The Journey of Cape Verde. Portrayed through the eyes of a young boy it follows his passage to uncovering his identity as a true Cape Verdean. Filmed in four years it accompanies him on his journeys and delves into Cape Verde's rich history.

The festival spans over three day, claiming to be a realistic protrayal of this often, all too easily overlooked genre.

In an intimate setting, the films will be shown along with commentary from members of Manifesto.

By Christina Warner

"Voodoo" - Big Idea in a Little Space

“Voodoo”- Big Idea in a Little Space Hidden behind an antique storefront, and easy to miss when walking down bustling Beak Street in Soho, the Riflemaker Gallery is currently housing an exhibition entitled “Voodoo: Hoochie Coochie and the Creative Spirit.”

Made up of a collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, literature, and more from both the past and present, “Voodoo” tries to further explain and interpret the religion of Voodoo as well as, according to the catalogue, “look at the mystery of the creative act.” The combination of art tries to express the feeling and vibe of voodoo through one’s experience, rather than spelling it out word for word (although there is a fair amount of information scattered on placards throughout the exhibition).

Upon entering the small gallery, one must be wary of possible traffic jams; the small room has artwork beginning right past the doorway, as well as in the middle of the floor, so making your way around the room can be a bit of an obstacle course. The room’s creaky, worn wood floors add to the ‘attic full of treasures’ feel of the exhibition, and the pieces in the room range from the Wishing Machine, a replica of the original William Burroughs piece, where one can make a deposit and send voodoo to someone (one pound for good voodoo, two pounds for bad), as well as various sculptures and paintings that adorn the walls. The most striking piece in this room though, is Mati Klarwein’s 1963-65 Crucifixion, a triptych that seems to blend a tree of life with the Kama-sutra and Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. The downstairs (the exhibition covers the first three floors of the small gallery) has some fantastic old photography that include images of Voodoo rituals, although one must be warned of the stench coming from Marina Warner’s Bed of Time, an installation of melting, burning wax.

The top floor was by far my favourite, an eerie, childlike room filled with objects and sculptures most would find in a nightmare. A grim-reaper looking figure walks a puppet in the corner as a massive sculpture made entirely of hair greets you as you enter. Two faceless child mannequins that stare out the old paned windows are among the other items that haunt the dimly lit room. Music creaks through the air, adding to the scary feeling that one of the sculptures may just jump out at you if you don’t watch your back. The Riflemaker Gallery is quite a small space to attempt to explain the art of Voodoo and the creative drive in one go, however they do a fairly good job at giving people a taste of the spirit of both.

Rachel Karasik

The Fortunate Isles - A Study in African Transformation

This is a amazing book about Cape Verde that speaks of the roots & heritage of what forms this nation. We will provide reviews, news and information on African music, art, literature, culture and events.

What is Manifesto?

"Manifesto was founded in 2005 by Alberto Tavares, with a bright and ambitious concept to bring a small piece of Africa to London through Film, Art, Music & Culture. Manifesto Events and Film Festival offer an opportunity to introduce the true wealth of African culture and increase visibility of emerging African artists. Manifesto offers this genuine point of difference by specializing in African sounds and furthermore, PALOP (African countries that speak Portuguese) to each and every event. With an African music policy, the deep origins of post colonization beats and sounds are entwined with a contemporary feel of modern African artists."
